Tully
stars Charlize Theron as Margo, an overworked, exhausted mother at the end of
her rope. Her world is changed when she and her husband hire a night nurse,
Tully (Mackenzie Davis from The Martian,
Blade Runner 2049, “San Junipero”),
who brings with her new wisdom, new energy, and new challenges. Early reactions
to the movie praise an insightful, imaginative story about a unique bond
between two women in different places in their lives.

LIFE OF THE PARTY

In the aftermath of her
divorce, Deanna Miles (Melissa McCarthy) decides to go back to college and finish
her degree… which puts her in classes alongside her own daughter. To her
daughter’s surprise (and horror), Deanna proves to be much more popular on
campus than anyone had expected. Life of
the Party might sound silly, but it’s always fun to see McCarthy—one of
this decade’s most talented comedic performers—dropped into another ridiculous
scenario.

BEAST

Beast
follows Moll (Jessie Buckley), a young woman who finds unexpected romance in
the person of Pascal (Johnny Flynn), a stranger. Things get complicated when a
serial murderer begins to strike in her tight-knit, isolated community. Things
get worse when Pascal becomes the primary suspect. Early reactions (and the
trailer, below) suggest a haunting, moody thriller with an intricately woven
story.

DEADPOOL 2

It’s been about two
years since Ryan Reynolds’s passion project blew the doors off the box office
and became Fox’s highest grossing X-men film. Now, everyone’s favorite R-rated superhero
returns with Deadpool 2, which sees
Deadpool unite with a band of misfits to form the X-Force. I’m a little cautious about what appears to be Deadpool’s self-aware, irreverent style being quickly enveloped by Fox’s
franchise ambitions, but with any luck Deadpool
2 will be exactly as delightfully subversive as its predecessor.

FIRST REFORMED

First Reformed
follows a lonesome parish pastor named Ernest Toller (Ethan Hawke), who
undergoes a crisis of faith. Weighed down by the loss of his son, by the
troubling rise of extremism even in his own congregation, and by the eclipsing
of his historic parish by a megachurch, Toller finds his most basic commitments
challenged. Amanda Seyfried co-stars.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

Set before the events
of the original trilogy, Solo: A Star
Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich in the titular role and features
fan-favorites Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover)
as well as newcomers Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke),
Val (Thandie Newton), and L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge). Judging from a
comparatively tepid response so far, Solo
could very well be the first major misfire in the Disney-engineered Star Wars renaissance. But even if that’s
the case, a trip to the Star Wars
universe will almost always be worth it, because, you know, lightsabers and
stuff.
