ANT-MAN AND THE WASP

After Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War, nobody would blame Marvel if the studio
took a well-earned break for the rest of 2018. But instead, Marvel Studios is
taking a victory lap with Ant-Man and the
Wasp, the follow-up to 2015’s Ant-Man.
The movie sees Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man team up with the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) to
take town a mysterious new enemy, Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). Thus far, Marvel
has used Ant-Man as a drama detox of
sorts, bringing some levity to the MCU after big bursts of global catastrophe, so
Ant-Man and the Wasp should be plenty
of fun.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

Lakeith Stanfield stars
in Sorry to Bother You, an offbeat
comedy getting quite a bit of buzz after its release at Sundance. The movie
follows a black man struggling to make his way in the world—until he finds
unprecedented success in telemarketing by using a “white voice.” Tessa
Thompson, of Thor: Ragnarok and Creed fame, co-stars.

EIGHTH GRADE

Comedian Bo Burnham
wrote and directed Eighth Grade,
which dramatizes the very specific agony of adolescence. Elsie Fisher plays
Kayla, a teenager nearing the end of one exceptionally rough eighth grade year.
In the course of her last week, she endures pressures from without and within.

BLINDSPOTTING

Fans of Hamilton alum Daveed Diggs will want to
pay attention to Blindspotting, a
film starring Diggs and his real-world friend Rafael Casal as two movers in
Oakland, California. Their friendship comes under new strains after Collin
(Diggs) witnesses a police shooting. Diggs and Casal also wrote the script.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: FALLOUT

Love it or hate it, it’s
hard to deny the continuing power of the Mission
Impossible franchise, which has produced two top-of-the-line spy thrillers
since its revival in 2011. Fallout finds
Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) at odds with his own agency as he tries to stop a
deadly new threat to global security. Part of the reason for the success of
these last few installments has been a commitment to hair-raising stunts, and
trailers for Mission Impossible: Fallout
suggest the group might have managed to raise the stakes yet again.

Dwayne “the Rock”
Johnson gets his Die Hard on in his
latest action-adventure flick, Skyscraper.
Johnson plays Will Sawyer, an amputee who lives with his family in an
ultra-modern, ultra-secure skyscraper. When the building comes under attack, it’s
up to Sawyer to save his family, beat the bad guys, and pull off badass stunts in
the process.

MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN

Look, there’s no doubt
in my mind that Mamma Mia! Here We Go
Again, coming ten years after the release of the original jukebox musical Mamma Mia!, will be exactly as
ludicrous, shallow, and otherwise regrettable as its predecessor. At the same
time, there’s no denying that something about Mamma Mia’s unabashedly flamboyant style connects with audiences.
So if this kind of thing is your guilty pleasure, it’s time to get ready.
