The Nun
is the latest film from James Wan’s Conjuring
universe. Set in 1950’s Romania, it explores the origins of the habit-clad
demon from The Conjuring 2. The Nun could easily go either way—it doesn’t
exactly look subtle—but damn if that’s not a good jump scare.

I AM NOT A WITCH

I Am Not a Witch
tells the story of a young Zambian girl mistaken for a witch and confined to a
superstitious “witch camp.” This satirical film, produced in 2017, is the
British entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the upcoming Academy Awards.

MANDY

In Mandy, Nicolas Cage descends into a nightmarish, psychedelic,
chainsaw-filled revenge streak. He plays Red, a man whose relationship with his
lover Mandy is interrupted by the appearance of a paranormal cult. With nothing
left, he takes justice into his own hands.

WHITE BOY RICK

I’m not totally sold on
White Boy Rick, the film based on the
real-life youngster who became a drug kingpin and, eventually, an FBI
informant. But with an intriguing premise, Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer
Jason Leigh in lead roles, and a fairly stylish trailer, it’s probably worth
paying attention to.

THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS

Based on the novel of
the same name, The House with a Clock in
Its Walls follows young Lewis Barnavelt as he goes to live with his uncle
(Jack Black). Much to his surprise, Lewis learns that his eccentric uncle is
actually a warlock living in a house filled with mayhem and mystery.

THE SONG OF SWAY LAKE

The Song of Sway Lake stars Rory Culkin as Ollie Sway. Together with his
friend/accomplice, Ollie returns to his family’s old lake house to steal a
valuable record. Once there, they find themselves unexpectedly entangled with
the locals.

THE SISTERS BROTHERS

John C. Reilly and
Joaquin Phoenix play a pair of assassin brothers in the western comedy The Sisters Brothers, based on the novel
of the same name. The movie follows the brothers as they chase their latest
target. Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed also appear.
