Upcoming Movies You Should Be Hyped About: March 2019

GRETA

(March 1)

     In Greta, Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) meets a lonely widow (Isabelle Huppert) after discovering her purse left behind on a train. The two quickly hit it off, and Frances begins spending time with her new friend… until she realizes Greta has a secret. Greta may look like a B-horror movie, but with any luck it’ll be a B-horror movie we can get behind.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

(March 8)

     Marvel Studios kicks off its 2019 slate with Captain Marvel, the MCU’s first movie headlining a solo female superhero. Set in the 1990s, it documents Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) transition from Air Force pilot to superpowered, intergalactic hero. Along the way, she’ll fight in a war between two alien empires, encounter a young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and protect Earth from the shape-shifting threat known as the Skrulls.

GLORIA BELL

(March 8)

     Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, whose last film A Fantastic Woman (2017) won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, wrote and directed Gloria Bell. It follows Gloria (Julianne Moore) as she rebounds from a divorce. Although she initially enjoys her newfound freedom—hitting dance clubs in LA like nobody’s watching—her life gets a bit more complicated when she falls in love with Arnold (John Turturro). Interestingly, Gloria Bell is a new interpretation of Lelio’s own critically acclaimed film, Gloria (2013).

(March 22)

     I am so unbelievably excited for Us, the new film from Jordan Peele (Get Out). The movie follows a young family (Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke) who go on a breezy breach vacation with friends. Their plans get upended when a group of sinister strangers—who look exactly like them—begins threatening their safety. Check out the unnerving trailer below.

DUMBO

(March 29)

     Dumbo is the first of three live-action remakes of Disney animated classics to be released this year. (The other two are Aladdin in May and The Lion King in July). Loosely based on Disney’s 1941 film about a circus elephant who can fly, the movie was directed by Tim Burton and stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Alan Arkin.
