Venom
marks another attempt from Sony to launch their own branch of a shared Marvel
universe, and frankly, it looks like it could go either way. The movie stars
Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, whose life is turned upside down when an alien
symbiote chooses him for its new host. It’s up to Eddie to steer the powerful,
malicious entity into something resembling heroism.

Amandla Stenberg plays
Starr Carter in The Hate U Give,
based on the 2017 best-selling novel of the same name. Starr lives in the
liminal space between two worlds; she grew up in a poor, black neighborhood,
but she goes to school with rich, white kids. After her friend becomes the
victim of a police shooting, Starr feels compelled to break her silence.

LIYANA

Liyana
is a mixed-genre film: part documentary, part animated feature. It tells the
story of a fictional young heroine, Liyana, as she tries to rescue her
brothers—and it also tells the story of the five real-life Swazi orphan children
who collaborate to craft Liyana’s story.

FIRST MAN

Oscar-winning director
Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land), reunites with Ryan Gosling
for First Man, a biopic about Neil
Armstrong in the years leading up to the moon landing. The movie takes a
slightly different tack than other astronaut movies, focusing more closely on the
mission’s personal toll for Armstrong and his family. Claire Foy plays Janet,
Neil’s wife.

BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE

Bad Times at the El Royale is a neo-noir thriller from Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods, The Martian). At the El Royale hotel, situated on the
California/Nevada border, visitors can pick a room in either state. One night,
seven strangers (played by Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota
Johnson, Jon Hamm, and more) find their destinies mysteriously intertwined.

Set 40 years after the
events of the original movie, Halloween
follows Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in the aftermath of infamous murderer
Michael Myers’ escape from prison. The original Halloween is a highly influential forefather of the slasher
subgenre, and this direct sequel (technically the 11th in the Halloween series) looks to honor that
legacy by taking the story back to basics.

Acclaimed director Luca
Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name)
spearheads Suspiria, a remake of
sorts to the 1977 supernatural horror film of the same name. The movie tells
the story of a young dancer (Dakota Johnson) whose ambition leads her to enroll
in a dancing company which, unbeknownst to her, has been overcome by sinister
forces. Tilda Swinton co-stars as the company’s director, Madame Blanc.
