A QUIET PLACE

Co-written, directed, and produced by
John Krasinski (of The Office fame), A Quiet Place takes place in a dystopian
future where the remaining humans live in silence to avoid being hunted by a
species of monster that uses sound to detect prey. Krasinski and his real-life
wife Emily Blunt star as two parents of a young family trying to maintain some
semblance of a normal life in these somewhat depressing circumstances. When I
first saw the trailer for A Quiet Place,
I wasn’t entirely sold—it looks enticing, sure, but also more than a little
gimmicky. But thankfully, early reception indicates that Krasinski’s latest
might just be a new horror classic. If, like me, you’re a scary movie person,
it’ll be a must-see.

WHERE IS KYRA?

Where is Kyra? tells the story of Kyra
(Michelle Pfeiffer), a woman trying to support her invalid mother on a meager
income. When her mother dies, Kyra resorts to desperate measures to keep her
apartment and maintain some level of stability. That might sound bleak (and it
is), but the draw will be Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance; it’s been a while
since she’s had a lead role that really showcases her talent. Kiefer Sutherland
co-stars.

YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE

You Were Never Really Here has been making
the film festival circuit since its debut at Cannes last year, but it’s finally
making its way to theaters this month. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix as Joe,
a war veteran who now occupies himself by investigating and locating missing
girls. Combine that intriguing premise with some prestigious awards (Best
Screenplay and Best Actor at Cannes) and a few mysterious, haunting trailers,
and suddenly You Were Never Really Here
is looking like something worth paying attention to.

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR

Even if you’re getting tired of the
relentless tide of Marvel superhero movies these days, this is probably one to
sit up and take notice of. Avengers:
Infinity War is the culmination of all 18 movies in the Marvel Cinematic
Universe (10 years of storytelling!), bringing together superheroes and supervillains
from across franchises for an epic fight against Marvel’s biggest and baddest
archenemy, Thanos. Marvel has a history of sticking the landing when it takes a
risk, but compared to risks of the past like the original Avengers or Captain America:
Civil War, the ambition of Avengers:
Infinity War is still unprecedented. I’m optimistic about its prospects,
but even if it does turn out to be Marvel’s long overdue crash-and-burn
disaster, it will probably still be a crash-and-burn disaster worth witnessing, because, you know, explosions and stuff.

DISOBEDIENCE

Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams star in
Disobedience. The movie tells the story
of Ronit, a woman exiled from her Orthodox Jewish community due to her
attractions to another woman. When Ronit returns years later, the two women
find that their mutual attraction has not dwindled with time and distance—a realization
that only further complicates their relationship with the community. With any
luck, Disobedience will have
insightful things to say about the intersection of religion and sexuality—an
eminently relevant topic. It’s also worth noting because its director, Sebastián
Lelio, just won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with his other
2017 release, A Fantastic Woman. His talent
behind the camera is evident even in movie’s trailer, which you can watch
below.
